In Case You Missed It
UK Finance, This Month
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is now live
From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with income over £50,000 must keep digital records and file quarterly updates to HMRC, not one annual return. More than 860,000 people are in scope, and the first quarterly deadline fell on 7 August. The threshold drops to £30,000 in 2027 and £20,000 in 2028, so more of your people, and their side income, get pulled in over time.
Every UK director must verify their identity by 18 November
Identity verification at Companies House is now mandatory under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act. New directors have needed it since November 2025, and all existing directors and persons with significant control, six to seven million people, must verify by 18 November 2026, at their next confirmation statement. Miss it and filings get rejected, and it is a criminal offence.
The Audit Reform Bill has been dropped
The government has scrapped the long-awaited Audit and Corporate Governance Reform Bill, judging it too costly for large companies, though it still intends to put the Financial Reporting Council on a statutory footing when time allows. Meanwhile the FRC has launched a technology sandbox and new guidance on agentic AI in audit, a clear signal of where scrutiny is heading.
Rates held at 3.75%, and a cut looks unlikely this year
The Bank of England held Bank Rate at 3.75% in late July on a 6 to 3 vote, with inflation at 2.6% in June and projected to peak near 3.2% by the end of the year as energy prices bite. The next decision is 17 September. If you are modelling cost of capital or a refinancing, it is sensible to plan on rates staying where they are into 2027.

CFO Case Study: Hiring a Private Equity CFO in a £90m PE-Backed Business

Most PE-backed businesses between £50m and £150m revenue reach the same inflection point: the finance function that got them through acquisition needs to be rebuilt for growth, reporting rigour, and eventual exit. The CFO hire at that stage isn't a like-for-like replacement, it's a structural upgrade, and getting it wrong costs more than a failed search fee. It costs board credibility with investors.

This case study walks through exactly how that played out in a £90m PE-backed business. It covers what the board initially thought they needed versus what the brief actually required, how investor reporting gaps shaped the scorecard, and why the successful candidate wasn't the most obvious CV on the longlist. If you're a CEO, founder, or operating partner facing a similar hire, or even questioning whether your current finance leadership is fit for the next stage, the parallels will be immediate.

AI in Finance
One tool. One habit. No hype.
This issue's tool
Julius AI · chat with your spreadsheets and data
Upload a management pack, a model or a messy export and ask questions in plain English. It runs the analysis and shows the working, so you can interrogate the numbers without building another pivot table.

A lot of a finance leader's week goes on turning data into an answer: what is driving the variance, which cohort is slipping, what the cash looks like under three scenarios. The analysis is rarely hard, the setup is.

Julius lets you upload a spreadsheet and just ask. It writes and runs the analysis, charts it, and shows the code behind it, so you check the logic rather than trust a black box. For a quick variance dig or a board question you did not prep for, it is minutes rather than an afternoon.

The habit worth building: when a number surprises you, upload the underlying data and ask it what changed before you ask your team. You often walk into the conversation already knowing the answer. Mind what you upload on anything sensitive, as with any external tool.

Hiring a finance leader and want to know what good AI fluency looks like in interview? Reply to start the conversation, we run that one regularly.

Planning a senior finance hire in Q3 or Q4? Talk to us now, not when the role goes live.

Our market data shows shortlists are thinning, particularly at FP&A and Controller level. We work best when we can map the market before a brief is finalised, not after. If you have a live mandate or a seat you know is coming, a 20-minute scoping call now saves weeks later.
