Market Intelligence
What We're Seeing Right Now
CFO hiring is the most resilient corner of the market.
Of the 11,570 CFOs tracked in our UK database, 14.0% started a new role in the last twelve months, the highest movement rate of any tier except FP&A. Median CFO tenure sits at 4.3 years (P25 to P75: 2.3 to 7.3 yrs), suggesting a natural cycle of roughly 18 months bedding in, two years delivering, then a move. For boards planning succession or a capital event in 2027, the search window is shorter than most assume.
For Finance Directors, it's a hirer's market right now.
FD hiring has cooled to 422 starts (Jan to Apr 2026) from 569 a year earlier, and for anyone planning a hire that is quietly good news: fewer competing mandates, less noise, and more of the strongest people willing to take a call. Those top FD candidates are sitting tighter, with median tenure at 4.6 years, so engaging passively interested talent takes a warmer conversation than posting a job ad. Get that right and the choice available to you now is a strong one.
Platform-fluent FP&A talent is a real competitive edge.
Anaplan appears on just 192 profiles out of 57,305 tracked. Adaptive Insights sits at 182, BlackLine at 145, OneStream at 88. If your business runs, or is migrating to, any of these tools, a finance leader who has done it hands-on is rare, which is exactly why it is worth targeting. Name the platform in the brief and hire for it, and you land an advantage most of your competitors simply cannot buy.
Controllers are the stability anchor of the finance function.
Financial Controllers sit for a median of 4.8 years (P25 to P75: 2.5 to 8.8 yrs), longer than any other senior finance role including CFO and FD. By contrast, Heads of FP&A turn over in a median of 3.0 years and FP&A Managers in 3.3 years. For PE-backed businesses building value-creation plans, this means the FC is often the institutional memory of the finance function, losing one mid-hold creates disproportionate disruption.

Deep Dive
How Can Mid-Market Firms Attract Elite Finance Leaders Against Multinational Competition?

Most mid-market businesses we work with face the same quiet frustration: the finance leader they want is comfortable at a listed PLC or a multinational, and the pitch to join a £30m to £150m business doesn't land the way it should. The usual levers, title inflation, a vague promise of equity, the word 'entrepreneurial', rarely move the needle with someone who already has options.

What does work is more specific and more structural. Operational scope that a large-company FD would wait five years to touch. Equity mechanics that are genuinely aligned to a hold period. A board that can articulate what the finance leader is being hired to change, not just manage. Our latest piece breaks down how mid-market firms, particularly PE-backed ones, can build a credible, competitive offer that wins talent away from bigger competitors without simply outbidding them on base salary.

AI in Finance
One tool. One habit. No hype.
This issue's tool
NotebookLM · Google's grounded document assistant
Upload your board pack, management accounts, a contract or a whole data room, then ask questions answered only from those documents, with citations back to the source. It's free, and because it's grounded in what you give it, it won't invent figures the way a general chatbot will.

Every tool now claims an AI feature and most of it is noise. The uses that actually earn a finance leader's time are narrow: reading long documents faster, and never trusting a number you can't trace back to its source.

That's where NotebookLM earns its place. Point it at a 60-page board pack and it will summarise it, answer questions on it, and show you which page each answer came from. Ask what changed between two versions of a model and it will tell you. Its audio overview turns a dense report into a ten-minute listen for the commute.

The usual caution applies on anything sensitive or client-confidential, so mind what you upload. But for turning long, dull documents into something you can actually interrogate, it's the highest-value free tool out there right now.
